experiment in salvation army

Monday my group and I served in Salvation Army in Deleware. They serve a small building. As soon as I went in, there are lots of bread on the table. When I walked around I saw there are lots of clothes in the cabinet. And there is a kitchen in that building. If they just provide can food or bread they do not need a kitchen. The can food are set on the side of the wall. I did pick check the production date, they are from October and December. It is not a log time ago. On the wall of the office there are some leaflet were nailed. It said, “We have money that's probably yours! Please come and get it.” Do they just served food what is the leaflet mean? Some apples are settled in the corner in a big box. But fruits are easy to rot. There is a small room with food in it. After some service there there was one woman came in and ask for help. We did prepare the food for the people who will came on Tuesday. But there are 6 boxes we need to prepare. There are not so much people need food pantry for in Deleware center. But the extra food will rot if they still were set on the corner. I did ask these question to the leader of this building. Every food out the the small room are free to take for people. Breads, cans, fruits are donated from the grocery store. The extra food will be donated to the school before rot. The clothes in the cabinet are also free to take. There is a church next to the serve building. They usually work together. If some one from the church needs food, the Salvation Army also will give them. In some holiday they cooperate to hold a party, the kitchen are for the food on party. The salvation army also cooperate to other organization. The leaflet I saw on the wall are one of these organization.

we should stop wasting food

From the article “Living On Nothing But Food Stamps” it introduce how food stamps help people. On the other hand I have a question. What does the restaurant do for their extra food? We know there are more and more people needs help for food in the recession. However, I still can find people wasting food. For example when I go to Quiznos, I order a sub. The worker will take out a bread and cut about 1 over forth part of the bread and throw away. That part they throw away almost have 12 cm long. If they sell 10 subs a day, they have to throw 1.2 miters long bread. 1.2 miters long bread can help at lease 3 adult out of hunger or 5 children feel full. "The UCLA Center for Health Policy and Research, published that over 3 million adults in California could not put food on the table and 1.3 million children are going to bed hungry." Once I did ask a question to one of my friends whose parents are the owner of Chinese buffet. I asked, “How do you do for the extra food everyday?” “Throw away.” he answer with thought. It is no doubt that there are lots of extra food in buffet. They wast countless food. It is very sarcastic there are millions people suffer in hungry on the other hand the restaurant keep wast food. So stop wating food and plan a policy to recycle them is the best way for the extra food.
